If your decking is gray, you can try power washing and using a wood brightener to bring back the natural colors of the wood. However, if the power washing and brightener does not restore the color, we would recommend sanding.
When sanding prior to applying ExoShield, 60 or 80 grit should be used to bring the deck back to it's natural color. If a smoother surface/appearance is desired, you can sand with 100 grit sand paper.
It's important to note that we do not recommend sanding any finer than 100 grit prior to staining with ExoShield. If wood is sanded too finely, it can make it difficult for the Tung oil in ExoShield to penetrate into the wood fibers, which is necessary for protection and longevity.
