How often you have to re-apply ExoShield greatly depends on the application and the color of ExoShield used. When it comes to decks, we typically recommend a yearly maintenance coat, but if the deck doesn't get a lot of sun or if one of our darker colors is used, sometimes you can wait 18-24 months between coats.
Siding typically requires a maintenance coat to be applied every 3-5 years. Southern and western facing walls may need to be re-coated more frequently than northern and eastern facing walls.
If you apply a maintenance coat prior to the wood graying out, the only preparation required is cleaning the surface of the wood and allowing it to dry for at least 3 days. After the surface has been cleaned and is adequately dry, you can apply the maintenance coat in the same way you applied the initial coating.
