We do not recommend pre-finishing air dried wood prior to or upon installation. If you stain air dried decking with a high moisture content, the finish will sit on the surface rather than soaking into the wood. Over time, moisture will naturally want to work it's way out of the wood, which can also push the finish out of the wood as the moisture tries to escape.
For best results, we recommend allowing air-dried wood to dry/acclimate outdoors or indoors for at least 3 months in warmer weather prior to applying an oil-based finish like ExoShield.
Moisture meters can be used to check for moisture content. ExoShield will work best if the moisture content is 15% or lower.
After allowing the wood to dry for 3 or more months, a cleaner and brightener can be used to bring the color of the wood back prior to finishing with ExoShield. We recommend power washing after or during the cleaning/brightening process.
